Our capital Capitol

There are a lot of things to see in Washington DC and many different angles and viewpoints from which to see them.

The Capitol Limited was slowed up by various freight trains during the night, mostly in Ohio apparently, so we arrived at Union Station about 4:30 in the afternoon, about 3 hours late. In order to get to the Washington Nationals versus Pittsburgh Pirates game on time I took a taxi to the Hampton Inn to meet up with brother Russ, from where we took the Green Line to Navy Yard and got off right next to the ball park.

I guess these are capable of working on land or water.

This is a really new park with the best video scoreboard I've seen and lots of rookie fans who apparently like all the electronic hoopla. Some of them thought it was appropriate to be informal at a baseball game, so they took off their ties. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard that right. The millions of minions slaving away for our elected representatives do take their ties off at Nationals Stadium.

“In beholding old stones we may feel our anxieties about our achievements–and lack of them–slacken . . . Vast landscapes [and seascapes] can have an anxiety–reducing effect similar to ruins, for they are the representatives of infinite space, as ruins are the representatives of infinite time, against which our weak, short-lived bodies seem no less inconsequential than those of moths or spiders.”—Alain de Botton in Status Anxiety
