From My Garden

Shasta daisies, slightly disheveled, from my front garden, near the rusty pheasant mailbox.

This is the 6th Sunday after Pentecost if you attend the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) if you are a Roman Catholic. I have no idea which is a better way of identifying a particular Sunday in July. I'm not sure what Sunday it is if you are a Baptist.

As I listened to the reading from Isaiah about Jerusalem, I wondered if our Mohammedan friends view Jerusalem in the same way as we Jews and Christians do. Some of them talk about bombing Israel which must include Jerusalem.

“In beholding old stones we may feel our anxieties about our achievements–and lack of them–slacken . . . Vast landscapes [and seascapes] can have an anxiety–reducing effect similar to ruins, for they are the representatives of infinite space, as ruins are the representatives of infinite time, against which our weak, short-lived bodies seem no less inconsequential than those of moths or spiders.”—Alain de Botton in Status Anxiety
